Safe Haven – Success Story

Management met a young person to conduct an initial assessment, on paper this young person presented as very challenging and had 19 placement breakdowns before us, resulting in them being evicted from each one. Each move left its mark, they arrived guarded, frustrated, and in their own words, deeply sceptical of yet another environment that claimed to offer “support.”

Our approach was simple: consistency, patience, and genuine care. We did not try to “fix” them. We listened, we gave them space to be angry, to question, to test boundaries and we did not waver. Over time, they began to trust. Slowly, the walls came down. They started engaging in routines, taking responsibility for their actions, and showing empathy toward others in the home.

There were setbacks, of course. Each challenge became an opportunity for reflection and learning. An example of this is when they set a small fire in the garden, instead of giving them notice to leave, staff wanted to work with them, we asked police to attend placement to explain the them the possible repercussions of their actions, staff got the fire service in to educate further. With guidance, they began to understand their own triggers, develop coping strategies, and set goals for themselves to make better choices. They started attending appointments and with staff support they secured a paid apprenticeship.

Today, I see a young person who has come a long way, who carries themselves with dignity. They are thoughtful, grounded, and increasingly self-aware. The transformation has not just been external, it is in the way they speak about their future, the way they handle conflict, and the pride they take in their progress.

Supporting this young person has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Their journey is a testament to what can happen when a young person is met with consistency, compassion, and belief. They did not just find stability, they found themselves.
